Hospital Indemnity Insurance

REQUEST ADVISOR CALLBACK

What is Hospital Indemnity Insurance?

Hospital indemnity insurance is coverage you can add to your existing health
insurance plan. This form of supplemental insurance pays you a predetermined
benefit amount per day for each hospital confinement. Your hospital indemnity plan makes
cash payments to you. And with the payments going directly to you, you can use these emergency funds to pay for costs not covered by your health insurance, like health insurance deductibles, copays and coinsurance, childcare expenses while you are in the hospital, or cost-of-living expenses as you recover.

What Does a Hospital Indemnity Policy Cover?

The coverage your hospital indemnity insurance provides will depend on your plan choice. In general, most plans cover:

  • Hospital confinement (with or without surgery)
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) confinement
  • Critical Care Unit (CCU) confinement
However, there are plans that cover even more. Some hospital indemnity coverage also includes:
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Continuous care
  • Outpatient X-rays and laboratory procedures
  • Outpatient diagnostic imaging procedures
  • Ambulances
  • Emergency rooms
  • Physician office visits

Is Hospital Indemnity Insurance Worth Getting?

In 2018, the average inpatient hospital stay was $2,517, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. With a comprehensive health insurance plan, you are still responsible for copays and coinsurance. On top of that, you are still required to pay your annual deductible before your plan will start covering the cost of your care. Can you predict how much you’ll owe without hospital indemnity insurance?
